How the principle was set in motion, of course none of us saw; Gagool was careful to avoid that; but I have little doubt that there was some very simple lever, which was moved ever so. little by pressure on a secret spot, thereby throwing additional weight on to the hidden counterbalances, and causing the whole huge mass to be lifted from the ground. Very slowly and gently the great stone raised itself, till at last it had vanished altogether, and a dark hole presented itself to us in the place which it had filled.

Our excitement was so intense (наше волнение было настолько сильным), as we saw the way to Solomon's treasure chamber at last thrown open (когда мы увидели, что вход в сокровищницу царя Соломона наконец-то распахнулся; to throw — бросать, кидать; быстро, неожиданно приводить в определенное состояние; to throw smth. open — распахивать), that I for one began to tremble and shake (что я, например, начал дрожать и трястись; for one — например, что касается).

"Enter, white men from the stars," said Gagool, advancing into the doorway; "but first hear your servant, Gagaoola the old.

The old hag started at the mention of the name (старая карга вздрогнула при упоминании этого имени).

"How knowest thou the dead man's name (откуда ты знаешь имя умершего человека)?" she asked, sharply (резко спросила она; sharp — острый; сильный, резкий); and then, without waiting for an answer, went on (а затем, не дожидаясь ответа, продолжила) —

"None knew what happened (никто не знает, что произошло); but it came about that the white man was frightened (но случилась так, что белый человек оказался испуган;to come about — происходить, случаться), for he flung down the goatskin with the stones (потому что он бросил свою суму из козлиной шкуры с камнями; goatskin — козлиная шкура; бурдюк/мешок из цельной шкуры козы/), and fled out with only the one stone in his hand (и бежал с одним единственным камнем в руке), and that the king took (да и тот забрал король), and it is the stone that thou, Macumazahn, didst take from Twala's brows (и это тот самый камень, который ты, Макумазан, снял с чела Твалы)."

"Well," I asked, breathless with interest, as we all were, "what happened to Da Silvestra?"

The old hag started at the mention of the name.

"How knowest thou the dead man's name?" she asked, sharply; and then, without waiting for an answer, went on —

"None knew what happened; but it came about that the white man was frightened, for he flung down the goatskin with the stones, and fled out with only the one stone in his hand, and that the king took, and it is the stone that thou, Macumazahn, didst take from Twala's brows."

"Have none entered here since (никто больше не входил сюда с тех пор)?" I asked, peering again down the dark passage (спросил я, вглядываясь снова в темный проход).

"None, my lords (никто, мои повелители). Only the secret of the door hath been kept (только секрет этой двери хранился), and every king hath opened it (и каждый король открывал ее), though he hath not entered (хотя и не входил). There is a saying, that those who enter there will die within a moon (есть такое предсказание, что тот, кто войдет в пещеру, умрет в течение одного лунного месяца; saying — произнесение, говорение; поговорка; предсказание; moon — луна; лунный месяц), even as the white man died in the cave upon the mountain, where ye found him, Macumazahn (так же, как тот белый человек умер в пещере на горе, где ты и нашел его, Макумазан).
