Эта стратегия, внедренная Милтоном и развиваемая последующие тридцать лет его дочерью Нэнси, оказалась удивительно успешной. Она позволила выявить многих людей, страдающих синдромом Хантингтона, подготовить базу данных об истории заболевания в их семьях и организовать хранение и исследование образцов ихтканей. Обо всей этой деятельности постоянно информировали научное сообщество, и каждый новый шаг, сделанный фондом, от выявления гена (который нашли Нэнси Векслер и Джим Гузелла) до его клонирования и получения модельных объектов для исследования болезни, был поводом для общего ликования всего научного сообщества.

Успехи Фонда борьбы с наследственными заболеваниями не ускользнули и от внимания родственников психически больных пациентов. Возник целый ряд групп защиты прав пациентов, страдающих различными психическими заболеваниями, самой влиятельной из которых стала Национальная ассоциация исследования шизофрении и депрессии (National Association for Research in Schizophrenia and Depression, NARSAD), организованная в 1986 году Конни и Стивом Либер и Гербертом Пардесом, бывшим директором Национального института психического здоровья. Эта ассоциация сыграла важную роль в координации и финансировании исследований психических заболеваний. В настоящее время работает и ряд других фондов, основанных группами защиты прав пациентов и оказывающих немалое влияние на исследования психических болезней.
