Приводимая Мэннинг оценка — 4 миллиарда рублей — довольно точна. Не считая выплаченных займов по закладным, к концу 1905 г. помещики получили в виде выкупных платежей от правительства и крестьянства, а также выручили от продажи и заклада земли чуть более 3,25 млрд. рублей. См. ниже гл. 2.

Нижеследующий обзор основан на 9-м томе Свода законов («Свод законов о состояниях»). Обновленные и исправленные переиздания этого тома были опубликованы в 1842, 1857, 1876 и 1899 гг. Только в начале XIX в. стали общепринятыми специальные термины, фиксирующие социальное положение: сословие (люди, пользующиеся одинаковым положением в обществе) и состояние. До 1740-х гг. концепция сословия выражалась термином чин, после этого времени и до конца XVIII в. — терминами стан, который акцентировал положение, статус, и род, акцентировавший наследственный и эндогамный характер сословий. Если дававшее обет безбрачия католическое духовенство рекрутировало новых членов из других сословий, а его иерархи зачастую имели знатное происхождение, то в России принадлежность к духовному сословию (как и ко всякому иному) была, как правило, наследственной. Иерархи православной церкви также, как правило, рекрутировались из семей священнослужителей. Одним из следствий этого был относительно низкий социальный статус даже высших православных иерархов, тогда как католические прелаты знатного происхождения пользовались на Западе очень высоким престижем.

В 1785 г. потомственные дворяне были разделены на шесть разрядов. См.: Приложение А. Отсюда термины «дворянство», «дворянин», и «высшее» или «первое сословие» означают только потомственное дворянство, если нет других указаний.

Введенная Петром Великим Табель о рангах определила лестницу служебных чинов для чиновников гражданской, военной и придворной службы. Высшей ступенью был чин 1-го класса, низшей — 14-го класса.

Крупными землевладельцами считались те, кто владел не менее 3000 десятин земли или 100 крепостных мужского пола; в группу средних землевладельцев вошли те, кто имел от 150 до 3000 десятин или от 5 до 100 душ мужского пола. На выборах средние землевладельцы получили пропорциональное представительство — по одному выборщику на каждые 3000 десятин земли и 100 душ мужского пола, принадлежавших тем, кто участвовал в предыдущем уездном дворянском собрании. Одна десятина равна 1,09 га.
