The Memory of the Blockade: Original Evidence and the Historical Consciousness of Society presents the results of the research projects realized by the Center for Oral History at the European University in St. Petersburg: The Blockade in the Fates and Memory of the Citizens of Leningrad and The Leningrad Blockade in the Collective and Individual Memory of the Inhabitants of the City (2001–2003). They analyses the image of the Leningrad blockade in the public conscience of the inhabitants of this city after the Second World War. Examination of the collective and individual memory of the blockade — the history of how its image was constructed in the official discourse of the post-War years and the personal recollections of the eyewitnesses — is accompanied by the publication of the interviews with those who survived in the blockade and the younger generation of the Leningrad citizens, whose parents or relatives abode the blockade.

Именно таких взглядов придерживался, в частности, один из крупнейших теоретиков коллективной памяти, французский социолог М. Хальбвакс, противопоставлявший подходы историков и мемуаристов (см.: Halbwachs 1950: 78–87).

С этой точки зрения, безусловно, заслуживает внимания статья Т. А. Ильиной (1973: 27–32), посвященная осмыслению опыта экспедиции преподавателей и студентов Калининского педагогического института и Калининского областного краеведческого музея в колхоз Молдино Удомельского района Тверской (тогда Калининской) области в 1965–1966 годах. В ходе этой экспедиции были записаны воспоминания местных жителей о революционных событиях 1905 и 1917 годов, Гражданской войне, коллективизации и Великой Отечественной войне. Это едва ли не единственная публикация в исторической литературе 1970-х — первой половины 1980-х годов, посвященная устным воспоминаниям как историческому источнику. Только с конца 1980-х годов на русском языке появляются первые публикации, посвященные «устной истории» (калька с английского термина oral history). При этом невозможно отрицать влияние западноевропейской и североамериканской историографии на развитие этого направления (см.: Виноградов, Рябов 1986: 6–16; Урсу 1989: 3–32; Писаревская, Ляшенко 1989; Никитина 1990: 210–216; Рожанский 1990:141–150; Коляда 1990: 25–30; Хубова 1997).

Так, в одном из новейших учебных пособий по социальным исследованиям ему дано следующее определение: «Устная история — это фактуально точное воссоздание определенных исторических событий. В ее фокусе не субъективный опыт деятеля, а историческое знание о событиях, процессах, движущих силах и причинах. Устные истории, рассказанные участниками событий, используются для накопления такого исторического и фактического материала» (Девятко 2003: 69).
