Thank you. Iβd like to speak this afternoon about the interaction of Buddhist philosophy with other philosophies.

When we speak about Buddhist philosophy, there is not just one type of Buddhist philosophy.
ΠΠΎΠ³Π΄Π° ΠΌΡ Π³ΠΎΠ²ΠΎΡΠΈΠΌ ΠΎ Π±ΡΠ΄Π΄ΠΈΠΉΡΠΊΠΎΠΉ ΡΠΈΠ»ΠΎΡΠΎΡΠΈΠΈ, ΠΌΡ Π½Π΅ ΠΈΠΌΠ΅Π΅ΠΌ Π² Π²ΠΈΠ΄Ρ, ΡΡΠΎ ΡΡΡΠ΅ΡΡΠ²ΡΠ΅Ρ ΠΎΠ΄Π½Π° ΠΈ ΡΠΎΠ»ΡΠΊΠΎ ΠΎΠ΄Π½Π° Π±ΡΠ΄Π΄ΠΈΠΉΡΠΊΠ°Ρ ΡΠΈΠ»ΠΎΡΠΎΡΠΈΡ.
If we look at the historical development of Buddhism in India,
ΠΡ ΠΌΠΎΠΆΠ΅ΠΌ ΠΏΡΠΎΡΠ»Π΅Π΄ΠΈΡΡ ΡΡΠΎ Π½Π° ΠΏΡΠΈΠΌΠ΅ΡΠ΅ ΡΠ°Π·Π²ΠΈΡΠΈΡ Π±ΡΠ΄Π΄ΠΈΠ·ΠΌΠ° Π² ΠΠ½Π΄ΠΈΠΈ.
then we find that many different schools of Buddhist philosophy developed
ΠΡΠ»ΠΈ ΠΌΡ ΠΏΠΎΡΠΌΠΎΡΡΠΈΠΌ Π½Π° ΠΈΡΡΠΎΡΠΈΡ ΡΠ°Π·Π²ΠΈΡΠΈΡ Π±ΡΠ΄Π΄ΠΈΠ·ΠΌΠ° Π² ΠΠ½Π΄ΠΈΠΈ, ΡΠΎ ΠΎΠ±Π½Π°ΡΡΠΆΠΈΠΌ ΡΠ°ΠΌ ΠΌΠ½ΠΎΠΆΠ΅ΡΡΠ²ΠΎ ΡΠ°Π·Π»ΠΈΡΠ½ΡΡ ΡΠΈΠ»ΠΎΡΠΎΡΡΠΊΠΈΡ ΡΠΊΠΎΠ».
and, although they are talking about the same issues, they each have their own interpretation.

This becomes even more confusing when we turn to Tibetan Buddhism
Π Π½Π΅ΡΠ²Π΅Π΄ΡΡΠ΅ΠΌΡ ΡΠ΅Π»ΠΎΠ²Π΅ΠΊΡ ΡΠΈΡΡΠ°ΡΠΈΡ ΠΌΠΎΠΆΠ΅Ρ ΠΏΠΎΠΊΠ°Π·Π°ΡΡΡΡ Π΅ΡΡ Π±ΠΎΠ»Π΅Π΅ Π·Π°ΠΏΡΡΠ°Π½Π½ΠΎΠΉ, Π΅ΡΠ»ΠΈ ΠΌΡ ΠΎΠ±ΡΠ°ΡΠΈΠΌΡΡ ΠΊ ΡΠΈΠ±Π΅ΡΡΠΊΠΎΠΌΡ Π±ΡΠ΄Π΄ΠΈΠ·ΠΌΡ,
because within each of the four Tibetan traditions, each of them has their own interpretation of each of the Indian Buddhist systems.

Even within the Indian schools, even within the Tibetan schools, there are many different authors
ΠΠ»ΠΈ, ΠΏΠΎΠΌΠΈΠΌΠΎ ΡΠΎΠ³ΠΎ, Π² ΠΊΠ°ΠΆΠ΄ΠΎΠΉ ΠΈΠ· ΠΈΠ½Π΄ΠΈΠΉΡΠΊΠΈΡ ΡΠΊΠΎΠ» ΠΈ ΡΠΈΠ±Π΅ΡΡΠΊΠΈΡ ΡΠΊΠΎΠ»Π°Ρ ΡΡΡΠ΅ΡΡΠ²ΠΎΠ²Π°Π»ΠΈ ΡΠ²ΠΎΠΈ ΡΠΈΠ»ΠΎΡΠΎΡΡ, ΠΊΠΎΡΠΎΡΡΠ΅ ΠΈΠΌΠ΅Π»ΠΈ ΡΠ²ΠΎΠΈ ΡΠΎΠ±ΡΡΠ²Π΅Π½Π½ΡΠ΅ Π²Π·Π³Π»ΡΠ΄Ρ.
and each of these authors has their own interpretation.

So, when faced with the question of the interaction of Buddhist philosophy with other non-Buddhist philosophies, this becomes very complex

because one has to ask which type of Buddhist philosophy are we talking about?

But one thing that makes the task a little bit easier is that there is a great deal of emphasis on definitions.

The study of philosophy in the Buddhist monasteries is actually referred to by the Tibetan word β definitions,β tsen-nyi in Tibetan.
Π ΡΠΈΠ±Π΅ΡΡΠΊΠΈΡ ΠΌΠΎΠ½Π°ΡΡΡΡΡΡ ΡΠ°ΡΡΠΎ ΠΎΠ±ΡΠ°ΡΠ°ΡΡΡΡ β ΡΠ°ΠΌ, Π³Π΄Π΅ ΠΏΡΠ΅ΠΏΠΎΠ΄Π°ΡΡΡΡ Π±ΡΠ΄Π΄ΠΈΠ·ΠΌ, β ΠΎΠ±ΡΠ°ΡΠ°ΡΡΡΡ ΠΊ Π΄Π΅ΡΠΈΠ½ΠΈΡΠΈΡΠΌ (ΡΠ΅Π½-Π½ΡΠΈ).
This, I think, is the most crucial aspect of looking at the interaction of Buddhist philosophy with other non-Buddhist theories.
ΠΠΎΡ Π² ΡΡΠΎΠΌ ΡΠΎΡΡΠΎΠΈΡ ΠΊΡΠ°Π΅ΡΠ³ΠΎΠ»ΡΠ½ΡΠΉ ΠΊΠ°ΠΌΠ΅Π½Ρ ΡΠ°ΡΡΠΌΠΎΡΡΠ΅Π½ΠΈΡ Π²ΠΎΠΏΡΠΎΡΠ° Π²Π·Π°ΠΈΠΌΠΎΠ΄Π΅ΠΉΡΡΠ²ΠΈΡ Π±ΡΠ΄Π΄ΠΈΠΉΡΠΊΠΎΠΉ ΡΠΈΠ»ΠΎΡΠΎΡΠΈΠΈ Ρ Π΄ΡΡΠ³ΠΈΠΌΠΈ ΡΠΈΠ»ΠΎΡΠΎΡΠΈΡΠΌΠΈ.
This is to look at the definitions of the terms,
ΠΠ°Π΄ΠΎ ΠΏΡΠ΅ΠΆΠ΄Π΅ Π²ΡΠ΅Π³ΠΎ ΠΎΠ±ΡΠ°ΡΠΈΡΡΡΡ ΠΊ Π΄Π΅ΡΠΈΠ½ΠΈΡΠΈΡΠΌ-ΡΠ΅ΡΠΌΠΈΠ½Π°ΠΌ.
because just the translation of the philosophical term is not enough,
ΠΡΠΎΡΡΠΎ ΠΏΠ΅ΡΠ΅Π²Π΅ΡΡΠΈ ΡΠΈΠ»ΠΎΡΠΎΡΡΠΊΠΈΠΉ ΡΠ΅ΡΠΌΠΈΠ½ β ΡΡΠΎΠ³ΠΎ Π½Π΅ Π΄ΠΎΡΡΠ°ΡΠΎΡΠ½ΠΎ.
because very often just from the name of the term one has very little idea of what it actually means.
Π§Π°ΡΡΠΎ Π±ΡΠ²Π°Π΅Ρ ΡΠ°ΠΊ, ΡΡΠΎ ΡΠ΅Π»ΠΎΠ²Π΅ΠΊ ΡΠΈΡΠ°Π΅Ρ ΡΠ΅ΡΠΌΠΈΠ½ ΠΈ Π½Π΅ ΠΏΠΎΠ½ΠΈΠΌΠ°Π΅Ρ, ΡΡΠΎ Π·Π° Π½ΠΈΠΌ ΡΡΠΎΠΈΡ.
If you donβt have a clear definition of the original term, when you translate it into another language you often think it means something quite different.

The study of comparative philosophy becomes a very, very broad topic requiring very thorough knowledge of the two systems that you are comparing.

used to criticize Western students on several points.

One of them was that we were always asking, βHow does this compare with that?β

He said that you can only compare two systems when you have studied each of them very thoroughly on their own.

If you try to compare two systems, neither of which you really understand fully, you are only left with confusion.

This is certainly very true.

Also, when we look at any particular school of Buddhist philosophy,
ΠΡΠ»ΠΈ ΠΌΡ Π²ΠΎΠ·ΡΠΌΡΠΌ ΠΊΠ°ΠΊΡΡ-Π»ΠΈΠ±ΠΎ ΠΊΠΎΠ½ΠΊΡΠ΅ΡΠ½ΡΡ ΡΠΊΠΎΠ»Ρ Π±ΡΠ΄Π΄ΠΈΠΉΡΠΊΠΎΠΉ ΡΠΈΠ»ΠΎΡΠΎΡΠΈΠΈ,
they donβt exist in isolation from other aspects of the teachings of that particular school.
ΠΌΡ Π΄ΠΎΠ»ΠΆΠ½Ρ ΡΡΠΈΡΡΠ²Π°ΡΡ, ΡΡΠΎ Π²ΡΠ΅ ΠΎΠ½ΠΈ ΡΡΡΠ΅ΡΡΠ²ΡΡΡ Π² ΠΊΠΎΠ½ΡΠ΅ΠΊΡΡΠ΅ Π΄ΡΡΠ³ΠΈΡ ΡΡΠ΅Π½ΠΈΠΉ ΡΠΎΠΉ ΠΆΠ΅ ΡΠ°ΠΌΠΎΠΉ ΡΠΊΠΎΠ»Ρ.
So, we need to study all the various aspects of a particular school in order to understand just one aspect,

because when we look at, for instance, the assertions about reality,
ΠΠΎΠ·ΡΠΌΡΠΌ, Π΄ΠΎΠΏΡΡΡΠΈΠΌ, ΡΠ°ΡΡΡΠΆΠ΄Π΅Π½ΠΈΡ ΠΎ ΡΠ΅Π°Π»ΡΠ½ΠΎΡΡΠΈ.
this has to be understood in terms of that schoolβs explanation of perception.

There are two functions which are involved when we start to get into a different culture.

One is how do we translate the Buddhist philosophy into another language coming from a different cultural and philosophical background.

because it affects the choice of terminology for translating philosophical technical terms from the original Buddhist languages into new languages.

When going into Tibetan, there werenβt already established philosophical terms from its own tradition, Bon.

It was not such a complicated task to make up new words,

which did not already have a connotation from their own philosophical system.
ΠΊΠΎΡΠΎΡΡΠ΅ ΠΊ ΡΠΎΠΌΡ ΠΌΠΎΠΌΠ΅Π½ΡΡ Π½Π΅ ΠΎΠ±Π»Π°Π΄Π°Π»ΠΈ ΠΊΠΎΠ½Π½ΠΎΡΠ°ΡΠΈΡΠΌΠΈ Π²Π½ΡΡΡΠΈ Π΄Π°Π½Π½ΠΎΠΉ ΡΠΈΠ»ΠΎΡΠΎΡΡΠΊΠΎΠΉ ΡΠΈΡΡΠ΅ΠΌΡ.
In the early Chinese translations they used philosophical terms from Chinese philosophical systems

and this probably caused a lot of confusion and misunderstanding.

Therefore, in later translations they replaced those terms with other terms.
