There was something so ridiculous at that moment to my mind in the idea of eating and drinking diamonds (для меня в тот момент идея есть и пить алмазы показалась настолько нелепой; ridiculous — нелепый, смехотворный, смешной; to my mind — по моему мнению) that I began to laugh outrageously (что я начал неистово хохотать; outrageous — возмутительный, оскорбительный; чрезмерный, крайний), an example which the others, followed, without knowing why (и этому примеру последовали и другие, сами не зная почему).

"Hee! hee! hee!" went old Gagool behind us, as she flitted about like a vampire bat. "There are the bright stones that ye love, white men, as many as ye will; take them, run them through your fingers, eat of them, hee! hee! drink of them, ha! ha!"

There was something so ridiculous at that moment to my mind in the idea of eating and drinking diamonds that I began to laugh outrageously, an example which the others, followed, without knowing why.

There we stood and shrieked with laughter over the gems which were ours (там мы и стояли и заливисто хохотали над драгоценными камнями, которые были нашими; to shriek — пронзительно кричать, вопить), which had been found for us thousands of years ago by the patient delvers in the great hole yonder (и которые были найдены для нас тысячи лет тому назад терпеливыми тружениками: «землекопами» в той огромной шахте /что располагалась вон там/; delve — впадина, котловина; копание, копка; to delve — /арх./ копать, рыть), and stored for us by Solomon's long-dead overseer (и были сложены для нас давно умершим надсмотрщиком царя Соломона; to oversee — наблюдать, надзирать, присматривать; overseer — надзиратель, надсмотрщик), whose name, perchance, was written in the characters stamped on the faded wax that yet adhered to the lids of the chest (чье имя, возможно, было выведено письменами, запечатленными на блеклом воске, который все еще прилипал к крышкам сундуков; to fade — вянуть; выгорать, линять; to adhere — прилипать, приставать). Solomon never got them, nor David, nor Da Silvestra, nor anybody else (Соломон так никогда и не получил их, ни Давид[1], ни Да Силвештра, и никто другой). Suddenly the fit passed off, and we stopped laughing (внезапно приступ /хохота/ прошел, и мы перестали хохотать).

"Open the other chests, white men (откройте другие сундуки, белые люди)," croaked Gagool (прокаркала Гагула), "there are surely more therein (там уж несомненно еще больше /алмазов/). Take your fill, white lords (набирайте побольше, белые повелители; fill— достаточное количество /чего-либо/; ср.: to do one’s fill— довести какое-либо дело до конца)!"

Thus adjured, we set to work to pull up the stone lids on the other two, first (после такой просьбы мы сперва приступили к стягиванию каменных крышек с двух других сундуков) — not without a feeling of sacrilege breaking the seals that fastened them (не без ощущения некоего кощунства ломая печати, которые скрепляли их; sacrilege— кощунство, святотатство).

Hoorah! they were full too, full to the brim (ура, они также были полны, полны до самых краев); at least the second one was (во всяком случае, второй точно был /полон до краев/); no wretched Da Silvestra had been filling goat-skins out of that (никакой несчастный Да Силвештра не наполнял мешки из козлиной шкуры /камнями/ из этого сундука; wretch— несчастный, жалкий человек; wretched— бедный, несчастный).

Suddenly the fit passed off, and we stopped laughing. "Open the other chests, white men," croaked Gagool, "there are surely more therein. Take your fill, white lords!"

Some of these biggest ones, however (некоторые из этих самых больших, однако), we could see by holding them up to the light, were a little yellow (как мы смогли увидеть, поднеся их близко к свету, были с немного желтоватым /оттенком/), "off colored," as they call it at Kimberley ("с цветом", как говорят в Кимберли; off color — необычного цвета/темнее или светлее полагающегося/; худшего качества, не чистой воды, /о бриллиантах и т.д./).

What we did not see, however, was the look of fearful malevolence that old Gagool favored us (то, чего мы не видели, однако, так это взгляда ужасного злорадства, которым старая Гагула наградила нас; favor — расположение, благосклонность; to favor — благоволить, быть благосклонным; оказывать внимание) with as she crept, crept like a snake, out of the treasure chamber (пока она уползала, уползала как змея, прочь из сокровищницы) and down the passage towards the massive door of solid rock (и дальше по проходу, по направлению к массивной каменной двери).
