Одна из самых неожиданных рецензий на "Единство и многообразие" критиковала меня за то, что я недостаточно серьезно отношусь к многообразию и придаю ему лишь периферийную значимость (T. Radcliffe, New Blackfriars, July 1978, pp. 334–336)! Я не понимаю этой критики.

Пока был опубликован только один из моих докладов — "Die Instrumente kirchlicher Gemeinschaft in der frühen Kirche", Una Sancta 44.1, 1989, pp. 2–13. Один из аспектов того, что я пытаюсь сказать, состоит в возражении против злоупотребления такой метафорой, как "конвергенция" (convergence). Конвергенция, по определению, означает сужение: скажем, движение по двум шоссе в результате становится движением по одному шоссе. Для меня предпочтительнее иная метафора — "слияние" (confluence): две реки сливаются в одну, но эта одна река более глубока и/или более широка, чем любой из притоков. См. ниже прим. 15.
