Интересно отметить, что Ли Квинби (Lee Quinby) критикует пристрастие западных исследователей к термину автобиография. Она считает, что это возвеличивание монологичной автобиографии за счет диалогичных или полифоничных жанров таких, как, например, мемуары, приводит к узости исследовательского взгляда и что «экспансия» автобиографии — это форма дискурсивной колонизации и в смысле авторитарного выбора жанра, и в смысле критической конструкции, которая превращает в норму субъективность, доминирующую в Европе после эпохи Просвещения, и в то же время сама является продуктом этой субъективности (Quinby L. В русской и советской традиции часто эта задача формулируется как социально-идеологическая. Характерным и в определенном смысле экстремальным примером может быть, например, произведение В. Г. Короленко «История моего современника», где в предисловии «От автора» писатель замечает: «В своей работе я стремился к возможно полной исторической правде, часто жертвуя ей красивыми или яркими чертами правды художественной. Здесь не будет ничего, чего я не испытал, не чувствовал, не видел. И все же повторяю: я не пытаюсь дать собственный портрет. Здесь читатель найдет только черты из „истории моего современника“, человека, известного мне ближе всех остальных людей моего времени» (Короленко В. Г. История моего современника.
